COR (Congregations Organizing for Renewal)
Community Organizer Position
As a faith based, grassroots federation, COR’s mission is to build the
leadership capacity of ordinary people, empowering them to have a voice in the
public arena. By coming together, COR’s hundreds of grassroots volunteer
leaders are improving health access for low income people, increasing neighborhood
safety through national violence prevention models, strengthening public schools,
ensuring more affordable housing and advancing immigrant rights. Over the past
10 years, we have passed affordable housing laws in four cities, worked with
sister projects to gain $100 million for a variety of health care needs, including
a new clinic for the working poor, and are building on our work to create equitable
public schools where all students are meaningfully prepared for college and the
workforce.
COR is a federation of 13 congregations and two neighborhood groups representing
approximately 25,000 low- and moderate-income families in Southern Alameda County,
including Hayward, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Union City and Fremont. COR is the
only organization with a large organized voice across southern Alameda County,
filling a void in communities where many low income and immigrant families face
linguistic isolation and a variety of social and economic challenges. COR is
a member of PICO (People Improving Communities through Organizing) National Network
and is also part of the PICO California Project, consisting of 19 congregation-based
community organizations representing 350 congregations and 450,000 families across
the state.
Together, we are all a part of PICO – People Improving Communities through
Organizing. With more than 1,000 member institutions representing 1million families
in 150 cities and 17 states, PICO is one of the largest community-based efforts
in this country. Together we are lifting up a new vision for American that unites
people across region, race, class and religion.
An organizer has responsibility for training congregational, school and neighborhood
leaders to develop Local Organizing Committees (LOCs) and the COR county-wide
federation to improve conditions for their families. COR has a strong learning
culture, including weekly staff development and coaching opportunities, and PICO
regional and national trainings. We place a high priority on personal learning,
relationship building, and creating a respectful multi-ethnic, multi-faith, and
multilingual organization.
