Graphic Designer
The Graphic Designer is responsible for implementing the Monterey Bay Aquarium
print brand identity. Responsibilities include graphic design applications through
producing final files for print production. He/she has a working understanding
of layout, type, and color process, and is able to take instructions from the
Art Director and Senior Designer.
Essential Functions
• Graphic Design and production: create layouts and designs for aquarium
print collateral. Select and arrange photos, type, illustrations and color. Collaborate
with Art Director and internal clients to create consistent visual brand.
• Possesses strong organizational skills, scheduling workflow, routes layouts,
proofs and other project elements for approval and production. Communicates technical
information to department and printer. Solid knowledge of printing, the ability
to prepare files and interact with printer. Archiving and record keeping skills
a must.
• Computer/Tech knowledge and operation, including PC and MAC based software,
and graphic programs: Quark Express, Photoshop, Illustrator, and ATM Type. Networking
software and information storage.
• Excellent knowledge of current design and communication trends, including
typography, printing processes, paper products, and how they relate to the MBA
conservation mission.
• Professional interaction within the department and all aquarium employees
and outside vendors.
• Budget management: General knowledge of costs associated with each project,
client reporting procedures and documentation.
Required Knowledge/Experience
• Excellent communication skills.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Excellent computer skills.
• College degree in graphic design or comparable training/experience.
• 1 year’s production experience.
• 2 years computer/tech experience.
• Experience in repurposing graphics and print pieces for use on the web
preferred but not required.
