Edward "Austin" Rivera
Austin is 5 years old and has a life-threatening blood disorder called Kostmann Syndrome. The effect of this disorder causes dangerously low white blood cell count or zero counts, which contributes to other illnesses. Doctors have requested the family start a search for a bone marrow donor. This requires a genetic match, so people of Hispanic background are most likely to be a match. Over 3000 Hispanics have been tested through family hosted drives. Although Austin's perfect match has not been found, the family hosted drives have helped 15 people find matches.

Current Update
Austin is currently on 5 oral medication (antibiotics) one which is Cipro, which is used to combat Anthrax. Austin was released from Lucille Packard Children's hospital November 20, 2001, after a 2 month stay. He had abscesses on his liver. The doctors do not know what type of bacteria caused this infection. Austin's white blood count is 0, which is considered critical and any type of surgery could be too risky. He will undergo CT scans monthly to ensure that the abscesses have not grown.

Vanessa Primrose
"I need a Marrow Transplant to save my life"
I have been diagnosed with Cancer of Leukemia. I am 12 years old.
At the age of 9, I underwent Treatment for two years and the Leukemia went into remission.
The Cancer has returned and I need your help.

Jacob Dagnino
Hi, my name is Jacob. I'm eight years old and a 3rd grade student at Olinder Elementary school. My favorite subjects are reading and science. I am an only child, but I have lots of cousins and friends to play with! I love to talk, sing, tell jokes and meet new friends. Some of my favorite hobbies are riding my bike, playing baseball, football, skateboarding and being outdoors. I really enjoy animals too!

Some days I can't do all the things that I love because of my disease. I was diagnosed with Leukemia on December 19, 1999. It was decided that I should undergo chemotherapy, which I continued for two and a half years. Unfortunately on July 15, 2002, which was my last day of chemotherapy, I was told that my cancer had returned.

I am now in remission and continuing with my chemo treatments. The doctor has told my Mom and Dad that I would be better with a bone marrow transplant. Even though my name has been in the Bone Marrow Transplant Registry since August 2002, we have not been able to find a match.

I would like to invite those of you who have not yet registered in the National Donor's Registry to come to my drive and be registered! There is a good possibility that you or someone you know could be my match and COULD SAVE MY LIFE or the LIFE OF ANOTHER PERSON! Thank you and I look forward to seeing you there! Sincerely, Jacob

Elba Gaytan
Eleven-Year Old Hispanic Girl Urgently Seeks Matching Bone Marrow Donor.
Oakland, CA - June 17th, 2003 - Elba Gaytan has acute lymphocytic leukemia and is undergoing chemotherapy treatment following her second relapse of the disease. According to Elba's physician, Barbara Beach, MD, "Statistically when a patient is in the third remission of this disease the chances for chemotherapy to be curative in the future are slim." The best option right now for Elba is a bone marrow transplant in order for her to continue having a healthy and happy childhood. Family and volunteers with support from the Red Cross are working together to promote registration of potential donors at a Hispanic-focused Bone Marrow Drive. Registration in the National Marrow Donor Program¨ could save Elba's life and the lives of others with life threatening blood diseases. At school, when Elba is not playing with the other children she likes to read about nature and play computer games. Her schoolteacher, Meriel Templeton of Chabot School in Oakland, commented, "Elba is an adorable child and is so kind in her interactions with other children." When at home, Elba likes to play with her dog and her neighbor's pet rabbit. Unfortunately, the chemotherapy used to treat her leukemia makes her so tired that she often misses school and does not have energy for study or play. Elba recently said, "Mom, I don't want to do chemotherapy again."

Miguel Eduardo Ramos
Age: 7, Birth date: August 4, 1995, Birthplace: Ensenada B.C. Parents: Miguel Ramos & Marisol Rodriguez
At the age of 5, Miguel was diagnosed with Leukemia. He had been under treatment for 2 years when the disease took another downturn which required hospitalization. Doctors determined that it was necessary for him to remain under treatment for 3 to 4 weeks in remission to attempt to clean the marrow to prepare for a bone marrow transplant from his possible donor, Jennifer, his 9 year old sister.

His parents are very concerned because the transplant comes with little guarantee that he will be cured completely. They are seeking to obtain a second opinion and any economic assistance because medical treatment is very costly and they do not have sufficient means to cover the costs of a transplant or chemotherapy treatment.

Denisse Castrejon - In Memoriam

Denisse was the 24 yr-old mother of a 4 yr-old daughter anxiously waiting for her mommy to come home.
She has been diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia. Basically, her bone marrow is not producing white and red blood cells and platelets. Therefore she is unable to fight infections and regularly suffers from internal bleeding (hemorraghing). Denisse is very ill at the Stanford Hospital.

Update
Denisse passed away on Fri, Jan 24, 2003. The viewing will be on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at 7:30 pm, the memorial service will be on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at 9:30 am . Both the viewing and the service will be held at the St. Anthony's Church, 3500 Middlefield Rd., Menlo Park. Its very sad to hear about a loss of such a young age and leaving behind a family who loves her and needs her. You would think people would have the heart and compassion to give of themselves to save another individual from such a fatal illness. Everyone thinks it won't happen to them and you want to think that your RAZA will pull together and save so many lives. Again I Thank you for all you help in the awareness campaign to increase the number of Latino/a donors, and for the information you post on your website. Mrs. Medina will be contacting Mrs. Ortega. They both can be each others support to be able to cope with such a loss both these ladies have suffered. Isabel Z Ruiz, Health Education Unit

01/16/03, Isabel Ruiz (family friend): I would of hoped that Denisse would have found a match, but unfortunately they haven't been successful. If a match were to appear it still to late for it to help, state her doctors. Currently the family is suffering the pain of having to plan a funeral for her. The doctor aren't giving any hope of over coming her illness. They state it just a matter of time before she leave her family and loved one behind. The last information I received from one of the nurses was that she had been in a coma and awoke yesterday after hear from her father who lives in Mexico. The father had asked her to hold on until he arrived to see her, approximately two hours later she awoke from the coma. I hope seeing her father gives her more strength to fight the illness a while longer. Currently the mother and some nurses are trying to raise money for the funeral cost that is too rapidly approaching. I sad to say another family is going to suffer a loses due to the lack of compassion from our own Latin community. I would have loved to be able to be a donor for someone. But unfortunately due to my own illness I wouldn't be accepted as a potential donor.

Monique Rosemarie Medina - In Memoriam

Lorraine Medina sadly lost her little Shepard Monique Medina, 9 years old, on Thanksgiving Day, 2002 at 4:50 am to Leukemia. Sadly, she wasn't able to stay in remission long enough to realize a transplant. Had there been a donor match a month or two earlier, Monique may be alive today! Our prayers are with her and her family. PLEASE register at the bone marrow drives - our community's children can be saved!! You can send your condolences or donation to: Velma Rosas c/o Monique Medina 3608 Keswick Court San Jose, CA 95127

Monique was 9 years old and had ALL Leukemia - Acute Lymphoma Leukemia.
This is a blood related cancer. Doctors have requested the family start a search for a bone marrow donor. This requires a genetic match, so people of Hispanic background are most likely to be a match. Over 3000 Hispanics have been tested through family hosted drives. Although Monique's perfect match has not been found, the family hosted drives have helped 15 people find matches. Monique was diagnosed in August, 2000. She went into remission a month later. She has been out of remission since May 20, 2002, and was on stronger chemotherapy to be considered for a bone marrow transplant to save her life.

09/25/02: I just wanted to keep everyone up to date on my daughter Monique. Stanford has set an admitting date for Monique to get started on October 7th. We will find out Monday after Monique's Spinal Tap and bone marrow aspiration is done to see if she is back into remission. If so than we will proceed with the date that Stanford has given us. The testing on the 2 donors must have been completed and they must have already chosen the better donor for Monique. Right now Monique is doing a lot of her physical testing. She had her Lungs tested yesterday and her dental appointment yesterday. Today she will have her chest x-rays done. Other testing that is going on to make sure her organs will be able to stand up to what is going to happen to her. I will let you know more after Monday. I just would like to thank those of you who are constantly calling me and asking me how We are doing on a daily bases. You just don't know how much that means to me. Thank You Ray for there is not a day that does not go by that you do not tell me that Monique and my family are in your prayers and telling me how much the Lord Loves me and my family. That just tops it all!! Your constant prayers and being there for me is medicine to me and to my family I just need for all of you to know this. All of you at work being so good to me and my daughter and my family. I Love you all. Don't stop praying for us. Ray don't stop sending me the scriptures I stand on them everyday and I am sharing them with my friends. Those of you here at work thank you for also keeping us in prayer I am often being told that and you just don't know how good that feels. God Bless All of you. For you my brother I would like to Thank You for hooking me and Monique up with the people at "Equally Yoked". I am excited cause they want to meet my family and to prayer over us. Love Lorraine
